Model Source: Star Ferry 3 (Uploaded by EDSELFILES on 6 Jan 2008 to Google 3D Warehouse)By: Vivian Kwarm The Pier 17 Ferry would serve as a means of transporting individuals from South Street Sea port to the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge. The Pier 17 Ferry would carry 4,000 passengers. The boat is 310 feet long, 70 feet wide. The Ferry operates between the Pier 17 and Brooklyn. The Ferry could depart from Pier 17, which would increase the amount of activity in this area. This would attract more tourists to that area. The ferry would run around the clock, every day of the year. Generally, the ferry would run every fifteen minutes during rush hour, and every half hour or hour during nights and weekends. During periods of reduced visibility or heavy weather, the schedule may be adjusted.

These rooftop gardens would probably be built by a private developer seeking to create a distinctive destination with views of the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge. This garden is accessed through elevators and staircases in the pavilion at the southeast corner. It boasts an amphitheatre, grass patches of various varieties, and paths leading to the edge of the garden for views of the rooftops of the Seaport and down to the East River. The developer rents out the venue for parties, private functions and so on. In the summer, Rooftop Films (www.rooftopfilms.com) is an anchor tenant, using this venue as the location for their newly inaugurated Indie Film Awards. When the garden is not rented, it would be open to the public to develop buzz around this new location.

North Seaport Pedestrian Zone

These bollards indicate the location of the pedestrian zone in the North Seaport. During rush hours, the bollards are lowered so that vehicles can pass through to make pickups and deliveries. During other times, they are raised to return the street area to the pedestrians, allowing the businesses around the area to spill out into the street space. When the bollards are up, deliveries can still be made by dropping off goods at the parking lot at 250 Water St. or the transportation facility on the Northeast corner of the Seaport, and then using hand trucks and light carts (like those used by Columbia Facilities) to shuttle goods into the pedestrian zone. The returning of the street to the community makes it possible for the community to put its imprint better on the neighborhood, with activities and programs organized in the street. And with new parking facilities at the periphery of the neighborhood, residents only need to walk a little further to their cars (if they even have cars).

This rooftop garden built on top of the transportation facility provides much-needed community space. An elevator and staircase in the southern pavilion provides access from the street level. It includes grasses and lawns as well as an amphitheatre. Paths run to the edges of the garden, offering views across the rooftops of the Seaport and into the East River.

Hostel in an old ocean liner: Enterprising hoteliers bought a decomissioned ocean liner, restored it to its former glory, and parked it in the East River in the revitalized South Street Seaport. Accommodating thousands of low-budget travelers, this hostel instantly boosts New York's capacity for backpackers. The young people it attracts from all over the world reinvigorate the docks and streets of the southern portion of South Street Seaport, drawing a new, young and hip crowd to the area. Every night, its decks hum with partying and excitement. For a similar project, see the STF Hostel in Stockholm (www.svenskatouristforeningen.se/en/Discover-Sweden/Facilities-and-activities/Stockholm/Vandrarhem/STF-Hostel-af-Chapman--Skeppsholmen).
